Celebrate World Cider Day with Saro Cider —

A Toast to Craft Cider and Gluten-Free Living

Did you know that June 3rd is officially recognized as World Cider Day? Here at Saro Cider, we’re thrilled to join cider enthusiasts around the globe in celebrating this special day. As a proud producer of high-quality craft cider in Nebraska, we’ve witnessed firsthand the explosive growth of this delightful beverage, driven by an historic change in consumer preferences.

Craft hard cider is experiencing a renaissance, and for good reason. Consumers are increasingly seeking out unique, locally-produced beverages that offer distinct flavors and artisanal quality. But there's another reason why craft cider is gaining popularity: it’s naturally gluten-free. This makes it a fantastic option for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, who often struggle to find safe and satisfying drink choices.

The Story Behind Saro Cider: Matt Wood’s Journey

The inspiration behind Saro Cider comes from our founder, Matt Wood, who was diagnosed with celiac disease about a decade ago. Faced with limited options for high-quality, gluten-free beverages, Matt set out to create an alternative that was not only safe for celiacs but also less sweet and more flavorful than many commercial hard ciders or gluten free beers on the market. His vision was to craft a beverage that could stand toe-to-toe with the finest beers and wines in terms of complexity and enjoyment.

“After my diagnosis, I realized there were very few options for people like me who enjoy a well-crafted drink but need to avoid gluten,” Matt recalls. “I wanted to create a cider that wasn’t just a substitute, but a standout choice in its own right. Too many existing ciders were too sweet to drink easily. That’s how Saro Cider was born.”

Why Craft Cider is a Game Changer for the Gluten-Free Community

For individuals with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, dining out and shopping for groceries can be a minefield. Many beers, spirits, and even food items contain hidden gluten, making it challenging to enjoy a night out or even a simple meal without worrying about adverse reactions.  Enter craft cider. Made from fermented apples and other fruits, cider offers a naturally gluten-free alternative to traditional alcoholic beverages.

At Saro Cider, we take pride in ensuring our ciders are not only delicious but also safe for those with gluten restrictions. Here’s why craft cider is a great choice:

  • Naturally Gluten-Free: Unlike many beers and spirits, craft cider is made from apples, which are naturally gluten-free. This means no hidden gluten ingredients to worry about.

  • Diverse Flavors: From dry and crisp, to sweet and fruity, to herbaceous and earthy, craft cider comes in a wide range of flavors to suit every palate.

  • Artisanal Quality: Craft cider is made with care and attention to detail, resulting in a high-quality beverage that stands out from mass-produced alternatives.

Limited Options for Gluten-Free Dining and Drinking

The options for gluten-free dining and drinking are still quite limited, which makes finding reliable and enjoyable choices even more important. Although this is improving, many restaurants and bars have limited gluten-free menus, and cross-contamination can be a significant concern. Even grocery stores can be tricky to navigate, with gluten hiding in unexpected places.

That’s why World Cider Day is such an exciting opportunity for the gluten-free community. It’s a chance to explore and enjoy a beverage that fits comfortably within their dietary restrictions without sacrificing flavor or quality.

Saro is currently distributed throughout Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, and even California. “There are surprising regional tastes. While Saro Sangria is very popular in the summer in Nebraska, consumers in San Francisco really gravitate toward our Saro Botanical Cider, while those in Los Angeles seem to really like our line of Saro Non-Alcoholic Ciders.”
