Exploring Edinburgh’s Gluten-Free Delights
Ah, Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland (the absolute mothership of gluten free options) during the Fringe Festival—a whirlwind of thousands of performances by both famous and up and coming stars, street performers, and, of course, incredible food; every August. For those of us navigating the world without gluten, it’s crucial to know where to find delicious, safe options amidst the chaos. Because of the number of gluten sensitive/celiac people in Scotland, there is an exploding number of food options (many restaurants will ask you if there are any food allergies or celiacs in the group). Many, if not all, have dedicated gluten free fryers, arteries beware-pack your own defibrillator! Fear not! I’ve scoured the city and uncovered some fantastic spots where you can indulge in gluten-free delights while soaking up the vibrant festival atmosphere, seeing shows, or learning about Edinburgh’s history. Let’s dive into Edinburgh’s gluten-free culinary scene!

On Victoria Street, the inspiration for “Diagon Alley” in the Harry Potter series, it is bustling. They take their gluten-free offerings seriously, ensuring a crisp and flavorful batter that rivals any traditional recipe. Pair your perfectly fried fish with their chunky, seasoned fries and dip options for a quintessentially British meal without the gluten. They even bring you gluten free sauces and vinegars! Wash it all down with a local cider like Thistly Cross or try a local gluten free beer from Bellfield Brewery. If you find yourself in another part of the city, odds are you are not far from another fish and chips place that will have delicious gluten free options.
